Species text
Microdynerus exilis was first recorded in Britain in 1937, since when it has been found in a number of counties from Dorset to Norfolk. This late discovery and apparent subsequent spread may suggest that this wasp is a fairly recent colonist or was perhaps introduced with timber. It is still restricted to southern England almost completely south of a line between the Wash and Severn (map in Edwards & Telfer 2001). It is a mason wasp which nests in old beetle burrows in dead wood, including in old wooden posts. Recorded habitats are varied, including woodland, parkland, gardens, heathland edge, chalk downland and gravel pits. References
